Livestream: Lise Davidsen sings Strauss

Friday 15 February 19:30

Norwegian soprano Lise Davidsen, in demand all over the world, joins Edward Gardner for the most tender and heartfelt orchestral song cycle in the repertoire.

Watch the concert live on this page. The transmission starts at 19.25 on Friday 15 February.

In contrast to the adolescent daring of his overture Don Juan, Strauss’s Four Last Songs were the composer’s resigned farewell to creative life and an elegy for Germany, destroyed by fascism and war. Lise Davidsen has a voice rich enough for these stirring songs, and Edward Gardner has the experience to accompany them delectably.

Completing the concert is Arnold Schoenberg’s passionate depiction of Maeterlinck’s symbolist play Pelleas und Melisande. Here the composer delivered a gripping representation of a tragic love story via an orchestra that delivers endless colours, moods and depths.
